Rare! Very difficult to find a copy available online. Chapter 1, "Education" states that propaganda is inherent in state education, such as the syllabus, decisions about what science is (consensus or hard fact) and whether education is about producing individuality or uniformity, clones (a fact which John Stuart Mill warned about in "On Liberty"): "This early cauterisation lasts through life, producing the emotionally shallow, self-centred people the System needs at the top. The system fills this emotional vacuum with pride and shame - emotions that depend ... on his standing in relationship to the society around him." Page 34 compared schooling to brainwashing techniques: "One of the primary duties of schooling is to wreck the self-confidence of children, which the System then allows them to buy back through performance ..." Page 39 clarifies this: "The races are of examinations, of fame, of authority, of earnings. ... many of them appear to be somewhat spurious. These races would not be so unpleasant if everyone started equally. But we don't." In Chapter 7, "Politics, War, Economics", Laurie states on page 118: "Politicians earn their salaries by resolving contradictions, by finding acceptable paths, by turning the burning issue into a trivial one. They, perhaps even more than anyone else, are the servants of the System rather than its masters." On page 120, Laurie puts it by comparing our political "democracy" to a choice between two set menus in a restaurant. One menu (party manifesto) is for soup, fish and ice cream. The other menu is for pate, chicken and fruit dessert. You can't choose, however, soup, chicken and ice cream. You are fixed with a "choice" made by the Two Parties. It is, of course, a very limited choice, like Hobson's choice.
